Yandex: Exact date of self-driving taxi launch in Moscow unknown

MOSCOW, Jan 11 (PRIME) -- Moscow has not set the final date to launch a self-driving taxi in the city yet, while the regulatory sandbox is almost at the end of agreement, a representative of Internet company Yandex, which designs the vehicles, told PRIME on Tuesday.

“The regulatory sandbox program, which will allow us to launch the self-driving taxi service in the district of Yasenevo is now at the final stage of agreement, but no ruling has been issued yet,” the representative said, referring to a district in Moscow’s south-west.

“We’ll be able to name the exact date of the launch only after approval of necessary regulation.”

Media reported quoting a source that self-driving taxis will start driving in Moscow in February.

Yandex said that it will report every six months to the Economic Development Ministry, which controls the regulatory sandbox, on the tests.
